Intermediate Licence Course September 2008

WRAA are pleased to announce that we will commence the Intermediate Licence training course on 9th September, start time will be 8pm in our clubroom. The course will be delivered over several weeks in order for everyone to take on board the learning required for this next stage of your amateur licence.

Initially we will be running each course section during the 2nd Tuesday WRAA meeting in the separate training room. The course will end with a multiple choice examination and the practical assessments are assessed during the course.

A significant part of the project and all of the other practical tasks must be completed at the club so that it can be demonstrated to be your own work.

Each candidate is assessed on their practical abilities such as:-

1. Construct your own simple DC circuit.
2. Measure voltages, currents and resistance (equipment provided)
3. Demonstrate the operation of diodes and transistors (equipment provided)
4. Make your own BNC to PL259 adaptor cable
5. Make your own 13A to IEC mains cable
6. Calibrate a Variable Frequency Oscillator (provided)
7. Build your own radio related project

A major part of the course is to build the project, you can choose your own project, which can be from a kit, or from your own or someone else’s design .

The meeting planned for 9th September is the registration evening and all candidates will be given the information they need in order to build your project.

If required projects can be supplied by the WRAA at a cost if required, there are a choice of projects, however all parts for items 1 – 5 are included in whichever project is selected by the candidate. Prices for these projects will be advised on the registration night.

The fee for the Intermediate Licence Course is £55, this includes the examination fee and the course fee (to cover overheads), it does not include any books or construction kits.  This fee will be collected on the night of 9th September, and cheques should be made out to Worcester Radio Amateurs Association.

New WRAA Hamchat Forum

WRAA Hamchat Forum

The WRAA has just added another element to their busy website, the Hamchat Forum!

The forum is open to anyone, you don't even have to register to read the posts, but if you want to post onto the forum you will need to register. There is also a members only section set up especially for WRAA members to share ideas and participate in general discussions.

It is hoped that the Hamchat forum will grow as time passes and include more and more categories. If there is something you want to chat about, pop it in the general discussions area, and if it turns out that another category is needed then we'll do just that.

Why not take a look, post a thread or just read what is already there?

Blacksheep on the Lizard

The BlackSheep Contest Group (M0BAA) will be active during the 6M Trophy Contest from Lizard Point, Cornwall at the weekend. The contest runs from 1400Z on Saturday, 21st June to 1400Z, Sunday 22nd June.  The Group includes Mike Tubby, G8TIC (WRAA Contest Manager), Matt Cabban, G0XDI, John Clark, G6YIN and Steve Purser, G4SHF.

The group will be operating for the whole 24 hours from their site in Lizard which is below the 50th Parallel, ie. 49 degrees North and hence has the rare locator/grid IN79JX, using their special contest callsign G8T (Golf-Eight-Tango). The contest is IARU Region 1 co-ordinated so activity is expected to be very high through-our Europe.

The station includes 2 x JRC JST245 transceivers plus ICOM IC-7400, 8877 amplifier, 7 element M-Squared 6M7JHV @ 80ft and 2 x DJ9BV 6ele @ 60ft.
Preferred frequencies are 50.144 (main) and 50.172MHz SSB.

The group will also have a modest station on 2M in-case of Sporadic-E or other DX being available - this will compise a 10ele DJ9BV long yagi and ICOM IC-7400 with 100W output.

Should anyone wish to contact the group while they are on site then call Mike G8TIC on +44 7973 225 144 or contact him via the DX Cluster as G8TIC.

QSL Manager: All contacts will be confirmed by SQL card, if requested - our QSL manager is Steve G4SHF (QTHR).
